A personal note, by Ashleigh Bates

At paper mâché, as we turn our attention to celebrating the mothers and mother figures in our lives, I find myself reflecting on my own, and the lessons she has given me.

Most days, she is the voice in my head. The one reminding me there is nothing I can’t do, quietly cheering me on at every milestone. She taught me to value education, to trust my instincts, to think critically, and to never lose sight of my worth. She also taught me to always have a plan B, and C, and sometimes even D and E.

She has guided me through every big decision, offering support without hesitation, even when I’ve chosen a path she might not have. Like many mothers and daughters, we don’t always agree, but I know how fortunate I am to have her.

Mother’s Day also carries a quieter reflection. For those navigating loss, distance, or more complicated relationships, it can hold a different kind of weight. It’s in that awareness that my gratitude feels even deeper.

I’m deeply thankful for my mother, Katherine. For her presence, her patience, and the way she has shaped how I move through the world. I love you endlessly, Mum. Happy Mother’s Day.

Considered Gifting

We curated a considered gifting list for all mums, all mums doing the most, doing less and loving most. A little something to say, Thankyou’ and I love and appreciate you. A go to, luxury Mother’s Day gift guide 2026 designed to feel personal rather than excessive. All gifts support small businesses in Australia.

Motherhood, in all its forms, is often found in the smallest, most unspoken moments. It lives in the daily rituals, the steady presence, the things done without ever needing recognition. While one day can never quite hold all that it means, it offers a pause. A chance to acknowledge it, to say thank you, and to give a little of that same care back. However it is spent, Mother’s Day can be a moment to hold close what matters most, in whatever way feels right.

We all have different experiences, feelings and memories with our mums, but the one thing we can all relate on would have to be this small archive of wisdom, warnings and wonderfully unscientific rules we all grew up with.

Shoutout to Short Talk Co for these nostalgic quotes

As a final note

Mother’s Day is rarely about a single version of motherhood, or one way of celebrating it. It is shaped instead by imperfection, shared memories, and the small gestures we have always offered our mums. Whether it is something as simple as breakfast in bed like we made as children, a bunch of flowers picked from the garden, or a drawing proudly placed on the fridge, these moments carry meaning and become the most meaningful ways to celebrate Mother’s Day.

This edit is simply a way of returning some of that care. In objects. In time. In moments that bring connection.
