The Drop – Mapleton Public House

A Country Pub With Something to Say: Mapleton Public House

A pub with good roots, great company and a story worth sharing.

There’s something special about a country pub. The familiar faces at the bar, the conversations that carry across tables and the feeling that you could settle in for an afternoon without watching the clock. Perched in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Mapleton Public House has all of that, with a rather beautiful story growing behind the scenes.

Housed in a historic Queenslander dating back to 1910, this much-loved local has entered a new chapter under the care of Jessica Huddart and Ben Johnston, the couple behind nearby regenerative farm, The Falls Farm. Together with acclaimed chef Cameron Matthews, they’ve created a place where the traditional Australian pub meets a genuine love of good food, thoughtful farming and the simple pleasure of bringing people together.

And the relationship between the farm and the pub is where things get particularly wholesome.

Just down the road, The Falls Farm grows an ever-changing collection of vegetables, herbs, fruit and edible flowers, many of which find their way onto the menu at Mapleton Public House. What’s growing in the garden helps shape what’s cooking in the kitchen, with familiar pub favourites sitting alongside dishes that celebrate the seasons and the people who grow our food.

But this is still very much a pub. A place to pull up a chair, order something delicious and stay for another round. The drinks list gives local breweries, independent producers and Australian wines their moment, with plenty to discover beyond your usual order.

For this month’s edition of The Drop, we’re heading up the range to meet the people behind Mapleton Public House and find out what’s filling their glasses. From the stories behind their favourite pours to the philosophy that makes this little corner of the hinterland so special, we’re discovering why this country pub is well worth the drive.

As always, we’re leaving with five recommendations for your own wine rack.

Wine & Spirit List

1. Stargazer Tupelo 2025

WHY WE LOVE THIS WINE

A wine close to Bridget’s heart, Stargazer was one of the first producers to capture her attention when she began working in the wine industry. Made by Samantha Connew in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, this beautiful white blend is delicate, a little wild and full of character. As Bridget describes it, it’s spring in a glass.

TASTING NOTES

Honeysuckle, rose petals and subtle almond notes, with a lovely briny quality and a touch of residual sweetness. Fresh, floral and vibrant.

Pair with

Vegetable-focused dishes, particularly those with fermented elements or a little spice.

TASTING NOTES

Briny and savoury, moving into notes of nougat and almond, with a subtle sweetness and beautiful vibrancy.

Pair with

Roast chicken, creamy mushroom dishes or aged cheeses.

2. Eastern Peake Chardonnay 2021

WHY WE LOVE THIS WINE

A beautiful example of Australian cool-climate Chardonnay, made by Owen Latta in Victoria’s Ballarat region. Bridget loves the family’s gentle approach to winemaking, allowing the land and seasons to speak for themselves. It’s wild yet restrained, with a complexity that keeps you coming back for another sip.

3. John's Blend Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

WHY WE LOVE THIS WINE

This one comes with a personal recommendation from Peter Huddart, father of Mapleton Public House’s publican, Jess. Peter and winemaker John Glaetzer go way back to their days in the South Australian wine industry in the 1970s. Made in Langhorne Creek, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful expression of Australian winemaking, rich in history and even richer in flavour.

TASTING NOTES

Eucalyptus and paperbark on the nose, followed by dark berries and dark chocolate. Rich and intense, balanced by a beautiful freshness.

Pair with

A rib fillet, or any red meat.

TASTING NOTES

Bright citrus, a balance of sweetness and sourness, with a delicate peppery finish from the nasturtium.

Pair with

A Friday afternoon after work or a long Sunday session.

4. Cara Cara, Seville Orange & Nasturtium Sour

WHY WE LOVE THIS WINE

A little taste of The Falls Farm, straight from the orchard to your glass. Madeleine brings together sweet Cara Cara oranges, tart Seville oranges and peppery nasturtium flowers, all grown just down the road. Finished with locally made Montville Dry Gin, it’s a cocktail that captures the connection between the farm and the pub.

5. Mapleton Public House Radicchio Amaro

WHY WE LOVE THIS WINE

Born from a little experimentation and a desire to make use of everything grown at The Falls Farm, this house-made amaro is a lovely example of the pub’s approach to food waste. Surplus radicchio, beetroot, citrus peels and herbs are transformed into an Italian-inspired digestif using locally produced gin. It took a little trial and error to get the balance right, but that’s all part of the story.

TASTING NOTES

Bittersweet and herbaceous, with earthy beetroot, citrus peel and warming spice

Pair with

A rich dark chocolate tart or a generous wedge of aged cheddar. The amaro’s bittersweet, herbaceous character would beautifully balance the richness of both, making it a lovely way to finish a long lunch or dinner.
