Effortlessly Cool Digital Art With Dina Broadhurst

Dina Broadhurst's pieces are undeniably unique, seamlessly blending women, flowers, and glitter into meticulously staged compositions that effortlessly ooze cool.

Dina Broadhurst is a celebrated Australian digital and collage artist based in Sydney and is known for her strikingly original compositions that blend women, flowers and glitter into carefully staged visual narratives that radiate style and attitude. Her work draws deeply from photography, fashion and popular culture, creating a distinctive aesthetic that has captivated audiences both locally and internationally.

Dina describes her artistic practice as one that begins with the familiar: photographs, magazine clippings, fragments of pop culture, and reimagines them into something new. “I am a digital and collage artist using photography and popular culture/fashion images as my starting point and repurposing and reimagining their message,” she explains.

Her creative journey began early. From a young age, Dina immersed herself in photography and collage, originally imagining a career in advertising. She studied visual communications at UTS with a major in film photography, learning darkroom techniques and the digital tools, like Photoshop, that would later become central to her practice. A detour into interior design deepened her appreciation for contemporary art and design, with artistic giants such as Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol informing her evolving vision. Eventually, a fine arts degree helped solidify her commitment to a full-time art practice. “I decided this was what I needed to do no matter what.”

The process behind her work is tactile and instinctive. She describes it as “memory, triggers, hunting and gathering pieces, cuttings, objects, colours and putting them all together to create a new visual meaning or statement.” Her signature style has developed organically through years of layering, juxtaposing unexpected elements and creating visual tension that challenges and engages the viewer.

Among her favourite works, Plastic Fantastic stands out. Visually, it’s the pink and green palette that resonates, but the meaning runs deeper. It’s a commentary on consumerism, desire, luxury and the environmental costs of modern life. The piece speaks to issues of sustainability, waste and the transient nature of contemporary values. “It’s about what we value, what we take for granted, the throwaway nature of society.” She explains.

Behind her art lies a small but vital support network. At the centre of this is her trusted printer, Fine Art Printing By Tom, who handles not just the printing and colour correction but also serves as a mentor and collaborator. “He knows what I want and he helps me achieve it every time without fail,” she says.

Two tools are central to Dina’s creative process: her Canon 5D Mark IV camera and Adobe Photoshop, both of which allow her to seamlessly merge traditional and digital elements.

Her ambitions for the future are bold yet grounded in the evolution of her practice: to create larger and more three-dimensional works. Her energy and drive are reflected in what she calls her “superpowers”: an ability to multitask “x 1000,” a willingness to laugh at herself, and a fierce passion for the ideas she believes in.

Women are a continual source of inspiration for Dina Broadhurst. Those in her life and those reflected in her work. She finds beauty and strength in vulnerability and duality. “All have strengths and weaknesses, light and shade, but being able to see both sides and feel comfortable and connected to both is what makes someone real and special.”

To young women and aspiring creatives, her advice is simple but powerful: “Passion, determination, stand up for your beliefs, be comfortable with who you are and don’t feel bad about the journey of discovering who you are and how long it takes. Just keep doing you.”

Even during uncertain times, Dina remains committed to supporting fellow creatives and continuing to buy art from other artists. A lifelong passion that aligns with her belief in the power of community and mutual support within the arts.
