The Drop: The Pocket Espresso Moffat Beach

This month’s edition of The Drop takes us to The Pocket Espresso in Caloundra’s Moffat beach to chat With Alex Rutherford, the venue’s night manager and self proclaimed wine connoisseur.

Founded by siblings Esther and Jonny Bundellu back in 2012, The Pocket started out as a tiny hole-in-the-wall coffee stop and gradually evolved into the community-hub café and bar it is today. While the early-morning grind is part of its DNA, the real transformation happens when afternoon arrives. The venue morphs into a place where friends linger over wine, cocktails and maybe even a fish taco or two.

When the afternoon hits The Pocket shifts gears: the bar opens fully, cocktails and beers flow, the outlook across Moffat Beach and the leafy courtyard set the scene. Menu items move beyond breakfast and brunch fare into share plates, mains and bar snacks, think fish tacos, burgers, and even Sunday BBQ specials.

Alex has been curating The Pocket’s wine list with the same easygoing confidence that defines the venue itself. And this month, shares his top wine picks, bottles that speak to The Pocket’s relaxed coastal vibe and the slow, salty afternoons that seem to stretch out forever.

4. 2024 Havilah Pinot Gris

WHY WE LOVE THIS WINE

The 2024 Havilah Pinot Gris is a standout example of Tasmania’s cool-climate viticulture, offering a wine that’s both expressive and balanced. Sourced from vineyards in Rowella and Rosevears in the western Tamar Valley, this wine showcases the region’s unique terroir. Winemaker Ricky Evans employs a two-wave harvest strategy to capture optimal ripeness. The first parcel undergoes skin contact to extract texture and flavour, fermenting in seasoned barrels to build weight. The second parcel ferments in stainless steel to preserve bright fruit character and purity.
